A lethal, brutal culture: Our own

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I have been struggling to clarrify my thoughts on Michael Jackson’s death. It looks like Andrew Sullivan, in his blog for The Nation, did for me when he wrote that, while he grieved for Jackson, “… I also grieve for the culture that created and destroyed him.”

Sullivan wrote: “That culture is ours, and it is a lethal and brutal one: With fame and celebrity as its core values, with money as its sole motive, it chewed this child up and spat him out. I hope he has the peace now he never had in his life. And I pray that such genius will not be so abused again.”

Via the CNN article, Michael Jackson and the ‘extreme’ price of fame.

Twitter me this …

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

As an aside, I learned about Jackson’s death, like many, through Twitter, which was no doubt suffering from gossip overload. Maybe it’s the limited number of tweets I follow, but my twitter experienced ranged from witnessing the shocked:

1

To the bizarre:

2

To the down-right stupefying:

3

That, of course, was tweets from Barenaked Ladies’ Steven Page, Stephen Colbert, and, for some reason, what appears to be a giant comatose whale being carried by birds.

Top 5 for Arama (Longform)

Monday, June 29th, 2009
 cribbed from facebook

cribbed from facebook

When I couldn’t figure out what to name this blog, I asked friends via email and Facebook for suggestions. I got a lot of great suggestions. However, In order to choose the name I looked at several criteria:

1. It would have to sound teasing-ly intriguing,
2. It should allude to the Number 5, or the words “countdown” or “music.”
3. It should be neat.
4. It should reference a Lapine character from a novel by Richard Adams.

Only one entry fit all four criteria, which was from my friend, Aramathea. Thus theFiver, named for Fiver the rabbit in Richard Adams’ Watership Down, was named. Incidentally, she responded to the news that her suggestion was picked, in part, because: “… seeing as how you suggested this book to me in the first place, isn’t it kind of like voting for yourself? ;D” I would just like to respond by saying: Yes, yes it is.

In order to compile this list, I picked the brain of my friend, Barbara, who has known Arama since childhood. Once brain-picking was concluded, I decided to go the oldies/nostalgia route. The result is a playlist devoid of irony – something simpler and sweeter than I usually post. Enjoy.

01. “Those Were The Days” Mary Hopkin
Barbara tells me this was something they sang before Arama moved away. Hopkin’s 1968 version is one of the best known versions of this standard. According to Wikipedia, the song emerged when Gene Raskin put English lyrics to the Russian song “Dorogoi dlinnoyu.”

02. “Lollipop,” The Chordettes
From the quartet that brought you “Mr. Sandman,” this 1958 is renown for the “pop!” at the end of the refrain. Contrary to what some think, there are other lyrics other than the repetition of the word “lollipop.”

(The guy in the tux is creeping me out a little bit.)

03. “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” The Mamas And The Papas

04. “I’m A Believer,” The Monkees
Like “Daydream Believer” and “Last Train to Clarksville,” this a Monkees signature tune. I’m told that Arama’s and Barbara’s friendship began, in part, in a grade school discussion over who was their favorite Monkee, which is odd, considering The Monkees were cancelled long before they were born. Anyway, I love this song. I always have.

05. “Stand By Me,” Ben E. King
I think this song has made its way onto more mix tapes and playlists dedicated to friends and those who are loved than any other.

A magical gangster powered by shooting stars

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

[Note: Please know I am not making fun of Michael Jackson, here. I am, however, making fun of Wikipedia. In a big way.]

In following the death of Michael Jackson, I found myself reading on Wikipedia some of the films he made to coincide with the promotion of Bad, the 3D flick for Disneyland, Captain Eo, and Moonwalker. Eo seemed straight forward enough, but the Wiki description for Moonwalker resembles out-takes from Trainspotting combined with the type of dreams I had when I was 8 and had a very high fever.

Smoothcriminal7An excerpt:

” … The film then backtracks to Jackson playing in a field with the children and their dog. The dog runs away, and in their search for it, Jackson and the children uncover the lair of Mr. Big, Frankie Lideo (Joe Pesci), a drug dealing mobster with an army of henchmen who wants to get the entire populace of planet earth addicted to drugs, starting with the children. Mr. Big discovers Jackson and the children, but they escape; Jackson tells the children to meet him at Club 30’s [sic], which turns out to be a haunted nightclub abandoned since the 1930s. The story goes back to the mobsters attack on Jackson, and here it is revealed that Jackson is actually a magical gangster, who draws his power from shooting stars. As one passes by the club, Jackson transforms into a sportscar and mows down several of Mr. Big’s henchmen. The story picks up on the children at Club 30’s, and at first the children are afraid, but when Jackson appears the scary atmosphere of the club transforms and the children find themselves back in the 1930s. The club is now filled with zoot suiters and swing dancers. Jackson participates in a dance-off with the other club members. …”

On Jackson

Friday, June 26th, 2009

It didn’t take long for Twitter to get clogged with people (including myself) with news of Michael Jackson’s death by cardiac arrest Thursday afternoon. TMZ, of course, was one of the first to tell and, no doubt, this will be one of the fastest-spreading stories to date. If it’s one thing we love in America even more than a freak show, it’s a high-profile death.

Now we sit back and wait for garish tributes and even worse, conspiracy theories (Jackson faked his death, Jackson was killed by the government). What we don’t do is sit back and give his family a modicum of privacy. For a man who was larger than life, he was still somebody’s son, brother, father. …

I’m not shocked, and I’m not surprised, by news of Jackson’s death. Someone once said shooting stars burn out the quickest.

What I will have a difficult time doing is sorting out my own mixed emotions. Charges against Jackson, amounting to accusations of pedophilia, were leveled against him more than once. In one case, they were settled, in another, he was acquitted. The truth of what really happened has died with Jackson.

The fact that his behavior and appearance seemed to grow more bizarre with every decade fueled an already obsessive tabloid media and audience.

His impact on the music industry is unquestionable. What remains to be seen is what will last longer: The myth of the man, or the music.

Cause of Jackson death unclear

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

It may be a while before a corner detirmines what caused Michael Jackson to go into cardiac arrest. Jackson, 50, died this afternoon in a Bel-Air home he was reportedly renting. The Los Angeles Times reports that robbery-homicide detectives have opened an investigation into the death, though police have stressed there is no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

As hundreds of reporters mobbed the UCLA medical center, there are reports that fans have been trickling into Neverland, Jackson’s former estate.

Elsewhere, the Rev. Al Sharpton praised Jackson in a press conference today, and was quoted in reports stating: “No controversy will erase the historic impact. He learned how to create even beyond his own shortcomings. Michael Jackson made culture accept a person of color way before Tiger Woods, way before Oprah Winfrey, way before Barack Obama.”

On CNN.com, Dick Clark was quoted as saying: “I knew Michael as a child and watched him grow over the years. Of all the thousands of entertainers I have worked with, Michael was THE most outstanding. Many have tried and will try to copy him, but his talent will never be matched. He was truly one-of-a-kind.”

CNN also had this by Quincy Jones: “I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news. For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don’t have the words. Divinity brought our souls together on ‘The Wiz’ and allowed us to do what we were able to throughout the ’80s. To this day, the music we created together on ‘Off The Wall,’ ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’ is played in every corner of the world and the reason for that is because he had it all … talent, grace, professionalism and dedication. He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I’ve lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him.”
