Kanye West does not care about white girls

Monday, September 14th, 2009

NEW YORK — Rapper Kanye West displayed a complete absence of class by interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for her award for best female video at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. West took the the mic from Swift’s hand in order to point out that Beyonce had one of the best videos “of all time.”

The Associated Press quoted Swift’s reaction after the show: “I was standing on the stage and I was really excited because I had just won the award. And then I was really excited because Kanye West was on the stage. And then I wasn’t so excited anymore after that.”

Swift looked visibly hurt and confused at the interruption:

The incident did have a silver lining, thanks to Beyonce who showed some true class. The AP reports: “Toward the end of the evening, when Beyonce won video of the year for ‘Single Ladies,’ the pop star promptly invited Swift out on stage to properly ‘have her moment.’”

The AP reports that West was asked to leave the show after the outburst, which he did. He has reportedly apologized on his blog, which is how you apologize when you’re a douchebag.

All of this makes us wonder, is there any real reason to actually hold VMAs, other than to promote the next installment of the cinematic shitheap Twilight franchise? Considering the “M” in MTV went the way of the dodo years ago, shouldn’t the network just concentrate on other crap like “My Super Sweet Sixteen,” “16 and Pregnant” and “16 and Fucking Annoyed by Ashton Kutcher”?

Gui-tar He-ro with stars in his eye

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Surviving members of Nirvana Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic are PO’ed that their late bandmate Kurt Cobain’s likeness’ has popped up in Guitar Hero 5. Players have reportedly been using the ani’bain to front the likeness of bands Bon Jovi and Bush.

Isn’t the real tragedy, however, the fact that Guitar Hero remains so popular? I mean, for the price of the video game and one or two controllers, you could, I don’t know, buy an actual guitar and learn to freakin’ play!?

In other news, skeletal R&B diva Whitney Houston isn’t dead.

Malaysia permits Muslims to get retarded

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Billboard is reporting that the Malaysian government has reversed a previous decision and is now allowing Muslims to attend a Sept. 25 Black Eyed Peas show. The ban had reportedly been imposed because the concert is being sponsored by Guinness which, while being a tasty beverage, contains alcohol and is forbidden from organizing concerts in Malaysia.

A victory for secularism in a nation where Muslims are governed by strict Shariah law; a victory for those who choose freedom over oppression; or, in the words of the Peas themselves: “My hump. My hump, my hump, my hump. My lovely little lumps.”

‘Red Hot,’ but in blackface?

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

There’s an interesting, and intellectual, debate over an article in the New York Times concerning the “Last of the Red Hot Mamas” Sophie Tucker. Tucker, who began her career in vaudeville, was a larger than life performer and arguably helped pave the way for the future of popular music. But like many entertainers of the early 20th Century, Tucker performed in blackface early in her career and was known as a “coon-shouter.”

Read Jody Rosen’s article on the release of Tucker’s earliest recordings on CD here; then check out Sady Doyle’s reaction piece, “Can a feminist hero do blackface?” in Salon. Finally read Rosen’s response in Slate. It’s an interesting debate handled with grace over a very touchy subject.

AP reports Jackson death ruled a homicide

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

LOS ANGELES — The Associated Press reported Monday that the LA county coroner ruled that Michael Jackson’s death is a homicide, and cited a combination of drugs as the cause.

The AP reports: “Homicide, or ‘death at the hands of another,’ is one of several possible findings in a coroner’s death investigation. The designation does not necessarily mean a crime was committed though it is a useful starting point for prosecutors, said Dr. Michael Baden, the former chief medical examiner in New York City and a forensics expert involved in many high-profile murder cases.”

The AP’s source spoke on the condition of anonymity, who reportedly said that the anesthetic propofol combined with at least two sedatives caused Jackson’s death on June 25.

Jackson’s personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, is the target of a manslaughter investigation, however that does not neccesarily make him a suspect. Murray reportedly administered propofol to Jackson the night before his death.

Les Paul, rock ‘n’ roll architect, dead at 94

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

lespaulWHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Les Paul, the musician who helped change the face of music, has died today at 94 of complications of pneumonia, the Associated Press reports.

“Though he couldn’t read music, Paul had a magnificent ear and innate sense of structure, conceiving complete arrangements entirely in his head before he set them down track by track on disc or tape,” his official biography, in part, reads.

“Even on his many pop hits for Capitol in the late ’40s and early ’50s, one can always hear a jazz sensibility at work in the rapid lead solo lines and bluesy bent notes – and no one could close a record as suavely as Les. And of course, his early use of the electric guitar and pioneering experiments with multitrack recording, guitar design and electronic effects devices have filtered down to countless jazz musicians.”

The Gibson Les Paul guitar, which went on the market in 1952, is one of the most iconic instruments in rock, country and more. The humbucker pickups lent themselves to the preferred distortion favored by many hard-rock guitarists like Joe Perry, Slash and Jimmy Page. But the guitar also lent itself to an array of other music stylings, from jazz to rockabilly.

“He’s the man who started everything,” Page is quoted on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Web site. ”He’s just a genius.”

“Without Les Paul, we would not have rock and roll as we know it,” said Terry Stewart, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. “His inventions created the infrastructure for the music and his playing style will ripple through generations. He was truly an architect of rock and roll.”

Paul was inducted into the hall of fame in 1988. He remained active until his death, performing and inventing. He released the American Made/World Played album in 2005, netting two Grammys.

“Les Paul was truly a unique human being,” said Jim Henke, vice president of exhibitions and curatorial affairs at the museum. “He was an artist who made his mark as a tremendously influential guitarist. He was also an inventor, the man responsible for the solid-body electric guitar and multi-track recording. Few people have accomplished as much as Les did in his legendary career. We will truly miss him.”

Re-examining ‘no homo’

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

blingSlate has a good article on the use of the phrase “no homo” in lyrics and homophobia in general in the hip-hop community. Jonah Weiner argues that the “no homo” reference, often used after an artists displays a quantum of sensitivity, is employed as a suffix that is “more complicated … than a simple slur.”

Weiner writes: “As society becomes increasingly gay-tolerant, hip-hop is reassessing its relationship to homosexuality and, albeit in a hedged and roundabout way, it’s possible that no homo is helping to make hip-hop a gayer place.”

Rise of the phrase, which has apparently gained ground in the NFL, is credited to rapper Cam’ron, who is also known for a one-time obsession with the color pink.

Nick Catucci writing for Vulture responded, in part: “… to call this progress might also be premature. After all, getting playful with gay-sounding phrases isn’t the same as winking at gays. … In a sense, ‘no homo’ is just a more evolved way of calling someone a ‘faggot’ — and evolved partly in that it’s more clever.”

This week in the decline of pop music

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

There has never been a better time to shun pop music.

According to Billboard, Mariah Carey’s “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,” which hits Sept. 15, will include a Carey-centric 34-page mini-Elle magazine issue with the CD and also available as a digital download. In explaining why Carey is partnering with Elle, Island Def Jam Chairman Antonio “L.A.” Reid is quoted: “The idea was really simple thinking: We sell millions of records, so you should advertise with us. My artists have substantial circulation-when you sell 2 million, 5 million, 8 million, that’s a lot of eyeballs. Most magazines aren’t as successful as those records.”

Billboard reports that the CD will be sold at Wal-Mart alongside Carey’s new signature Elizabeth Arden fragrance, Forever, “which has its ad on the booklet’s back cover. The CD and scent will also be displayed together in the beauty department.”

In other pop news, American Idol will be looking for someone new to heap praise on contestants who sing mediocre covers of Taylor Swift songs. According to published reports, Paula Abdul announced she is leaving the ridiculously popular talent show over Twitter.

“With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to Idol.” Abdul is reported having Tweeted, in part. “I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day1become an international phenomenon.”
