AP report: Drug administered by doctor may have killed Jackson.

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

The Associated Press is reporting that Michael Jackson’s doctor administered a powerful anesthetic to help him sleep, and law enforcement sources are saying that drug may have killed Jackson. Los Angeles Police told the AP that Dr. Conrad Murray administered the intravenous drug sometime after midnight June 25. The report states that Jackson regularaly recieved the drug, wherein a doctor would administer it when Jackson went to sleep, then stop the IV drip in order to wake him.

While Murray, who had tried to revive Jackson, has been the subject of a manslaughter investigation, Police say he is not a suspect, according to the AP. Read the full report here.

Depressing Newsbits of the World

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Adam Yauch, aka MCA, of the Beastie Boys dropped some depressing news – he’s got cancer. A tumor was discovered in his throat. The good news – Yauch said that it’s treatable, hasn’t spread, and will not affect his voice. Tour dates have been canceled and the release of their new album has been postponed.

We wish Yauch a speedy and full recovery, and are still looking forward to the Hot Sauce Committee Part 1.

Yauch made the announcement on a video on the Beastie’s web site:

In other depressing news, Sony has already closed a deal to pony up an unheard of $50 million for the rights to make a feature film on Michael Jackson, according to Variety. The film will likely draw from 80 hours of footage recorded in Los Angeles of Jackson rehearsing for his London comeback shows. Kenny Ortega, the man who unleashed High School Musical on an unwitting and arguably innocent public, who shot the footage, is expected to direct.

He won’t even have to use his A-K

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

cubeThe man who brought you such West Coast gangsta rap classics like “Cave Bitch” and “Cash Over Ass” will be adapting his family-friendly flick “Are We There Yet?” to the small screen.

According to AllHipHop.com, TBS secured a 10 episode contract from rap veteran Ice Cube after a bidding war with USA and BET. Meanwhile, we’re still waiting on Cube’s remake of “Welcome Back Kotter.”

In even more bizarre news, horrorcore rap act Three 6 Mafia have developed a reality cooking show. Really.

In case you missed it: Kasem has left the building

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Iconic DJ Casey Kasem signed off after 39 years in the music business July 4. Kasem, 77, passed the mic to Ryan Seacreast in 2004 to his syndicated radio program, but continued to emcee two abridged versions.

“We began the weekend of July 4, 1970, and after 39 years this will be our final countdown,” he said on American Top 20, with a lack of pomp or bravado.

ABC News said it was an end of an era in a report that, at times, read more like an obituary than a retirement announcement (perhaps not surprising, seeing as how it wasn’t long ago when fellow radio legend Dick Clark largely left the airwaves after a stroke). According to published reports, Kasem gave fans no advance notice of his retirement, and ABC said the DJ has declined interview requests.

However, the New York Times reports that, in a statement, Kasem said he “loved every minute” of the countdowns, but was looking to “free up time I need to focus on a myriad other projects.”

Kasem is also known for voicing the perpetual stoner Shaggy in the Scooby Doo cartoon series, but it will likely be his “long distance dedications” on American Top 40 that his fans will remember.

Reports of Internet radio death greatly exaggerated

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

IMG_0235The New York Times reported last week that record labels and online stations have agreed on new royalty rates that cover music streaming.

Sites, including the popular Pandora, argued that the previous rates were “eating up revenue” and could to put them out of business, according to the Times.

“They (record labels) clearly didn’t understand the potential of the medium and its reach,” Tim Bajarin, president of firm Creative Strategies, is quoted as saying. “From the beginning they should have been very flexible and realized that this was an opportunity for them to gain even broader audiences.”

A Son of Maxwell takes on United, airline responds

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

A Nova Scotia-based musician has decided to take on United Airlines over the damage done to a Taylor guitar, allegedly incurred by United’s baggage handlers. Dave Carroll has brought the fight to United using the only means a quirky Canadian musician has – YouTube:

According to an Associated Press story, Carroll, of the indie band Sons of Maxwell, ”has since been fielding calls for appearances around the world, including a call from the Oprah Winfrey show Thursday.”

To be fair, Taylor makes one great, albeit expensive, guitar – Carroll’s instrument required $1,200 to repair, according to the AP. The article states, in part: “The 41-year-old songwriter spent the past year trying to get compensation from United Airlines. When the airline refused to take responsibility, the songwriter made the humorous music video and posted it online. … Carroll initially told United he would write three songs about his broken guitar. He plans to debut the second song soon but hasn’t written the third one yet.”

According to the AP story, United has responded: “Carroll said officials for the airline said they liked the video and want to use it as a textbook case on how to handle customer complaints in the future.”

New NIN final dates, Colour returns

Nine Inch Nails will be adding a few shows in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles starting Aug. 22. The band had previously announced the tour that ended in June with Jane’s Addiction would be its last in the U.S.

On its website, NIN frontman Trent Reznor wrote the new dates ” … will be informal affairs in medium to small venues with longer set-lists, possible special guests, cool openers and other surprises. Upon reflection, the NIN/JA tour felt like we had to rush through sets due to a limited allotted set length and many shows were in daylight – it just didn’t feel right to end NIN that way. An offer to headline a festival (being announced soon) set the idea in motion to play some FUN shows to end this up with. If we can get it together we’ll film these shows, too.”

Living Colour is releasing its first studio album in five years with the band’s original lineup. “The Chair In The Doorway” will be released on Sept. 15 on Megaforce records, according to the band’s MySpace page. Living Colour is perhaps best known by their 1988 hit “Cult Of Personality,” the fact that they have a “u” in their name, and by being confused with the FOX sketch show “In Living Color.”

Chartage: Jackson continues, Caillat bubbles back

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Billboard is reporting that Michael Jackson’s posthumous rise on the charts is continuing: “Based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, Jackson’s catalog of solo albums sold a whopping 800,000 copies in the U.S.” in the week ending. July 5. “That’s an increase of 90 percent compared to the previous week, when his combined albums sold 422,000.”

Billboard said that Jackson is also dominating its Hot Digital Songs chart, claiming five out of ten slots. “Man in the Mirror” is his top selling download, but is being kept out of the number one slot by the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling.”

Colbie Caillat has also returned to Billboard’s charts. Her debut single “Falling For You,” from the forthcoming album “Breakthrough,” debuted at No. 12. “Falling For You” has also cracked the top 10 digital downloads, Calliat’s first reappearance on that chart since 2007’s “Bubbly.”
